Recently, we’ve covered how to clean your home after a renovation and gave some tips to prep your deck for the summer. Today we want to help you prepare your home’s exterior for the summer months, which includes your front and back yards, the swimming pool and maintaining the summer tools you’ll need to keep your summer oasis in tip-top shape.
Removing Winter Damage
After a snowy winter, the exterior of your property will have suffered quite a bit of wear and tear. Take a walk around your yard and look for any clumps of mud that have formed. You’ll want to remove these as they can stunt the growth of fresh spring grass. If you have a dog that used the yard as abathroom, you’ll need to clean up the doggy doo-doo he left behind. Consider laying down some grass seed in some of the more damaged spots on your lawn to help stimulate new growth.
While Fall is traditionally the season of the rake, early spring is also a good time to give your yard a quick pass. You’ll be able to remove debris such as fallen tree branches, dead weeds and the last of the leaves you weren’t able to pick up from the previous Fall.
If you have any stone hedging, make sure to inspect it for any potential shifts. Wicked winter winds along with freezing water may have displaced some of the stones. Make sure they’re well placed, just the way you like them.
Preparing for Heat
Eventually, we’ll be hit with a heat wave – and it can’t come soon enough after the Winter we’ve had this year in Ottawa. Spring is the time to prepare so that you can stay cool through those hot summer months.
If you plan on using an air conditioner this summer, these cooler months are best to buy or install the unit. There are plenty of articles and videos online to help you with the installation process, so we won’t get too detailed here And if you aren’t the DIY kind of person then give us a call because we can install the air conditioner for you. We do encourage you to check your window wells for debris and make sure that it’s there’s no signs of mold or rotting materials on the windows and doors. If you do happen to come across some damage, give us a call. We specialize in window replacement.
If you’ve got a swimming pool, make sure that all your pump and filter equipment are good to go. Stock up on chemicals and make sure that your water testing kit is ready. And of course, you’ll need to get the pool filled.
Tune up your Tools
If you have any kind of yard space that requires maintenance, you’re going to need the right tools to help get the job done. Now’s a good time to tune up your lawn mower. That means changing the oil, checking the blades and starting it up to let it idle for a while after it’s been sitting in a cold shed for six months.
If you plan on using a weed whacker or something similar, you can repeat the process.
If you’re looking to get the most out of your exterior this summer, give us a call. We’ve got experience designing and developing outdoor decks and patios in a variety of configurations.
