The temperatures in the Ottawa region are finally starting to warm up. Signs of spring are all around us. If you have a deck, you’ve probably noticed the snow that’s been heaped upon it for months is beginning to melt. Before long, you’ll be able to return to your deck, enjoying sunshine, fresh air and warm weather. But before that happens, you’ll need to take a few steps to get your deck back into shape for Summer 2014.
Take a look
Give your deck a thorough once over. You’ll want to be on the lookout for things like:
Nails or screws that are protruding after the temperature has warped the wood
Sturdy railings – Give yours a shake to make sure they’re sturdy and safe for the summer
Solid steps – Make sure if your deck has any stairs that the planks and support are in good shape
Cracks in your wood or rotting wood
All of these checks are important for your safety. Take your time with this and be thorough.
Clean it up
Now that you’ve checked out your deck and addressed any safety issues with it, it’s time to start prepping for summer fun. Ideally, you should remove any furniture you have on the deck and start with a clean slate.
Start off with a simple sweeping of the deck. Once you’re finished, you’re going to want to put on your detective hat and take a closer look. Be on the lookout for gunk, from old leaves and dirt, that’s built up between planks. These clumps of gunk can cause major problems for your wood if left unchecked, so you’ll want to make sure to get rid of those right away.
Take a look for any wood splinters that may have formed over winter. If you find any, get some sandpaper and work the rough spots over until they’re nice and smooth.
Finish off the cleanup with a simple wash and scrub of your deck. Soap and warm water will suffice. If you have a pressure washer you can use that too, just make sure you don’t damage the wood with too high a setting.
With your deck nice and cleaned, it’s a good time to do some staining and sealing. This will help ensure the longevity of your deck by protecting it from harmful UV rays and moisture.
There’s a wide range of treatment options available when it comes to protecting your deck. Visit your local home improvement store and talk with a staff member. Tell them about your deck and what you need. They’ll point you in the right direction.
Prepping your deck will take a bit of work but the rewards are well worth it. You’ll be able to enjoy a relaxing summer in your very own little oasis while being confident that your deck is up to the challenge.
